TBA'10 Arts Festival

Full festival schedule TBA'10 - Sept 9 - 19

Yay! Even though I'm not doing Front of House duties for TBA'10 this year, I am going to get to work on the Press Corp team, videotaping some of the events/performances.

I get to do the opera (going for my costume fitting with Francis on Thursday) AND I get to volunteer with PICA in a cool role as videographer!

I need to get my little DV camera ready for "lights, camera, action!". I think I'll do a Costco run to grab a few DV tapes. They are also requesting the raw footage be edited to DVD... even better.. I'm excited to use my video skillz for a volunteer gig.

9/11 - Charles Atlas with Merce @ the Whitsell Auditorium, SW
9/12 - Mike Daisey @ Washington High School, SE
9/13 - Dayna Hanson @ Winningstad Theatre, SW
9/15 - Nature Theater of Oklahoma @ Washington High School, SE
9/16 - Emily Johnson/Catalyst @ Imago Theatre, SE
9/18 - Mike Daisy @ Washington High School, SE
9/18 - John Jasperse Co. @ Lincoln Hall, PSU

*Note: I thought "Charles Atlas" was the musician that I am familiar with.. but it's the filmmaker.. different guy... hehe!

QA this weekend, grrrrr :(

Looks like I'll be working this weekend. Grrrrrr :( - boo!

This is Quality Assurance. The bottleneck, the group (me) that gets the short straw when it comes to crunch-time. It's not that bad really but I can't just let them give me the extra workload without giving 'em a little crap along the way. The engineers were apologetic today about having to test over the weekend. I also apologized to my coworker because when asked if I needed "help", I inadvertently enlisted my buddy for the weekend QA shift as well. Oops! Oh well, he was cool with it and noted that he'd already prepared to put in some time testing. That also means the engineers would also be "on-call" during my testing to diagnose and/or fix anything I might find.

Oh well, hopefully everything will go smoothly and bug-free.. yeah right. :)

Quality time with my cousins

My cousins and aunt came to visit Portland last weekend. We had a really good time! They arrived on Thursday while I was at work. We had dinner at my mom's house. Salmon cooked on cedar planks. It was a relaxing evening, sharing stories, enjoying the outdoors when it cooled down a bit.

On Friday, they all came downtown and met me for lunch. Actually, they were staying at The Nines a few blocks from my office. We had burgers and chocolate malts at The Original across the street.

That evening I met them at the Oregon Zoo for the B-52s concert. Although, the band was over an hour late getting started it was a good time relaxing in the shade on the grass eating sandwiches from Elephant's. There were some people (normal by Portland standards) nearby that the somewhat sheltered kids from the suburbs thought were "wacky" - creative wardrobe choices, tattoos, piercings, free form "dancing" - intermingled with the families, groups, and couples.... one big happy "family" listening to the B-52s. LOL! Actually I was giggling inside that they were getting a little exposure to the "culture" that Portland offers. It spurred a conversation afterward about the "Keep Portland Weird" bumper stickers and motto.

On Saturday, we met at the Portland Art Museum and toured the American Art exhibit, portraits, pastoral scenes, post-Civil War, Industrial Revolution. I think the kids were bored but it was nice to be indoors in the air-conditioned building. We hopped on the trolley and headed to Deschutes Brewery in the Pearl for dinner. When we got back to the hotel there was a band setup and playing in front of the entrance to Pioneer Place. The girls weaved their way up-close to the singer for a front-row view. I went up to check out their room, had a beer and chit-chatted.

On Sunday, I got the truck dialed in.. I vacuumed and took it for spin through the car wash. We headed out to the Gorge. We stopped at the Women's Forum lookup point facing Crown Point. We noticed that there were tons of blackberries. The girls couldn't get enough. We were eating them as quickly as we could find them. We hopped back into the truck and made a stop at the View Point Inn. Apparently, some scenes from "Twilight" were filmed there. They both were definitely Edward fans.

We continued on the Historic Highway, passing by Crown Point but not stopping. There was a bit of congestion as we got closer to Multnomah Falls so I dropped everyone off and found a parking spot down the way.

When I found them, the girls were getting sno-cones because it was so warm out. We started up the trail. My mom stayed at the lower bridge while my aunt made a valiant effort to keep up with us. She eventually decided she'd seen enough and turned back to find my mom. The four of us persevered to the top. As soon as we found the stream, the girls wanted to jump in. The water was pretty cold but we went in.

We took a quick spin to the waterfall lookout and went back to play in the water some more. After awhile we made out descent back to the lodge below and found my mom and aunt. It was a good hike and a very nice day to explore the Gorge a little.

That evening we met at the Melting Pot in SW. We almost didn't get in on account of not having prior reservations but they worked us in. The food was great and I was stuffed.

We left the restaurant and as we made it to the street, it hit us that we'd be saying goodbye. Their plan was leaving early the next morning and they were taking MAX to the airport. It was such a quick trip. I wish they could have stayed longer. We hugged and sniffled our goodbyes, vowing to see each other again soon and for safe travels and parted. They headed north toward the hotel, we headed east to my truck.

Keller Auditorium, here I come.

I'm stoked.. I just accepted a supernumerary role in the first opera of the 2010/2011 season with Portland Opera. I'm playing a Groom. I have no idea about the show but I'm looking forward to finally working with Chris Mattaliano as the Stage Director. As I've written in the past, I've worked with Mr. Mattaliano as his note-taker. I also got an invite to be in Hansel & Gretel in mid-Fall. The photos I've seen of this production look awesome.. something reminds me of that Tom Petty video for "Don't Come Around Here No More".

I was considering taking a hiatus this season to pursue other things and let things "soak" for awhile. I've officially told Jess at PICA that I won't get to reprise my role as House Manager this year :( .. kind of sad but it'll be fun to be in show again.

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to having my aunt Sharon, cousin Laura and her two daughters in town for a few days. I'll be putting on my tour guide hat and showing them the sites. We'll probably take a spin out to the Gorge, maybe go for a hike. We're also going to the Museum one day.

I'm having the carpets downstairs cleaned for the occasion. therefore I had to disassemble my home recording studio.. I'm hopeful that when I put it back together again, I'll get it setup so I can start recording (finally!). I've been spec'ing out a new Mac Mini.. possibly with solid state drive so it's nice and quiet for live recording.. of course, I still have the freeway (Hwy 26) nearby and the power lines on skyline have a tendency to add some "noise" to the signal.

I spent all day Saturday powerwashing the driveway and entryway. I have to say, at first it was a pain in the ass. however, once I started to see how well it was doing to remove the muck and mildew it became kind of fun. It was like having a giant "eraser". Awe'mazing....

sidenote: I got a job offer from Weiden + Kennedy.. it's nice to be sought after.. feels like I might have some bargaining power. I'd be interested in seeing what their "shop" looks like and the platforms they support. Since I'm pretty comfy here, I would be able to negotiate for better benefits, higher salary, private parking space :) .. a new Mac laptop.. .hehe.. first things first...

okay.. I'm going back to sleep. bai.

Healing (from "365 Tao" #11 for Northern Hemisphere)

          Fire cools.
          Water seeks its own level.

No matter how extreme a situation is, it will change. It cannot continue forever. Thus, a great forest fire is always destined to burn itself out; a turbulent sea will become calmer. Natural events balance themselves out by seeking their opposites, and this process of balance is at the heart of healing.
This process takes time. If an event is not great, the balance required is slight. If it is momentous, then it may take days, years, even lifetimes for things to return to an even keel. Actually, without these slight imbalances, there could be no movement in life. It is being off balance that keeps life changing. Total centering, total balance would only be stasis. All life is continual destruction and healing, over and over again.
That is why, even in the midst of an extreme situation, the wise are patient. Whether the situation is illness, calamity, or their own anger, they know that healing will follow upheaval.

To hit bottom is to have no where else to go but up. Or languish. I choose to try to learn and grow and return to a place of self-assuredness. My role at work in high profile project and the respect I have from coworkers gives me self confidence to build upon.
